News » 16.10.2020 - Italy: Radicchio prices are not too bad

After a disastrous spring with low prices, September is looking better. "We are pleased, as our round radicchio is doing well, with prices hovering between €0.70 and €1.20/kg depending on quality and on the day. These are not bad figures, considering the terrible results of the lockdown period," reports Giuseppe Boscolo Paolo, director of the Chioggia fresh produce market.

Prices are good, also because yields are not very high due to the high temperatures towards the end of the summer and the bad weather of the past few weeks. Now volumes are getting back to normal.

The great news for the fall of 2020 is the new specification that allows the placing of the EU logo "Radicchio di Chioggia Igp" on the labels of fresh-cut products.

"This means that radicchio from Chioggia in bags - cut, washed and ready to eat - can now be recognizable thanks to the logo. What is more, the EC blue mark indicating a Protected Geographical Indication can also be applied. This opens up significant market perspectives and helps us supply produce to consumers with a medium-high spending capacity willing to attribute a monetary value to the time element."
