News » 29.05.2020 - Spanish fruit and veg exports increased by 12% in first quarter of 2020

According to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes, during the first quarter of the year, the value of Spain's fresh fruit and vegetable exports to the EU amounted to 4,205 million Euro. This is 92% of the total and 12% more than in the same period of the previous year. Between January and March 2020, sales outside the EU also grew by 12.5%, reaching 323 million Euro.

Within the EU, the main destinations grew by more than 10% compared to the first quarter of 2019. The most remarkable cases are those of Germany, with 1,217 million Euro (+14%); France, with 698 million Euro (+13%); the United Kingdom, with 637 million Euro (+12%), and the Netherlands, with 418 million Euro (+13%).

Outside the EU, the main destinations are non-EU European countries, such as Switzerland, with 97 million Euro (+17%) and Norway, which received fresh fruits and vegetables worth 42 million Euro (+21%).

Outside of Europe, decreases have been recorded in Brazil and Canada, which are the main non-European destinations for the sector; however, the Arab countries have grown, showing positive development in recent years. From January to March, fruit and vegetable exports to the United Arab Emirates have grown by 32% compared to the first quarter of 2019, totaling 15.2 million Euro, and those intended for Saudi Arabia have stood at 14.2 million Euro (+30%). In both destinations, most of the exports correspond to citrus fruits and apples in the case of fruits, and to cabbages, lettuce and onion in the case of vegetables.

The consolidation of non-EU markets and the opening of new ones is one of the objectives of the fruit and vegetable sector, and Fruit Attraction, which is already working on the selection of the guest country for the next edition (to be held in Madrid from October 20 to 22 in Madrid), is also contributing to this.
