News » 16.09.2025 - Colombia: Driving sustainable growth for smaller growers

Guided by its mission to strengthen sustainable floriculture in Colombia and ensure that flowers bring well-being and inspiring experiences, Asocolflores is directing a program to integrate small flower producers into global sustainability standards through Florverde Sustainable Flowers (FSF)—an internationally recognized certification, verified by independent auditors. "At Asocolflores, we are committed to guaranteeing world-class sustainability standards across our sector. Our core belief is simple: every grower, regardless of size, can be sustainable. That is the principle guiding our work," said Augusto Solano, President of Asocolflores.

More than 30 small flower farms (under 10 hectares) in Colombia are already certified with Florverde. This accomplishment has created new market opportunities, strengthened operational practices, and boosted their competitiveness. Building on these results, a pilot program is now supporting six additional farms in the certification process, demonstrating that sustainability is attainable for growers of every size.

"Florverde is not just a certification," explains Daniela España, Director of Florverde Sustainable Flowers. "It is a roadmap that helps growers structure their operations, build a culture of sustainability, and prepare for the regulatory and environmental challenges shaping the future of floriculture." For many small-scale flower farms, achieving international certification once seemed beyond their grasp. But with technical support, industry guidance, and strong commitment, Colombian flower growers are proving that sustainability standards are within reach.

As Andrés Ciro from Novelty and Flowers, who is currently in the certification process, shares: "At first, we thought certification was distant, almost unattainable. But today we see it as possible. Florverde has helped us structure our processes and take better care of our people and the planet."

The message to global markets is clear: in Colombia, sustainability is a shared practice across the entire sector. From the perspective of certified farms, the benefits are already evident. María Fernanda Leguízamo, from Propagar Plantas SAS, emphasizes: "For us, the Florverde certification is an international distinction that guarantees traceability, worker well-being, and respect for the environment."

With nearly 30 years of evolution, Florverde Sustainable Flowers is today one of the most recognized sustainability certifications in global floriculture. By working together with Asocolflores to reach small flower growers, this initiative reflects a joint commitment: ensuring that Colombia's leadership in sustainable floriculture continues to grow, while strengthening the country's reputation as a reliable and future-focused supplier of cut flowers.
