Filiz Ozcan, a resident of the Susehri district of Sivas, has transformed peony cultivation, which began as a hobby, into a professional agricultural venture. With the support of her family, the production quickly expanded to 1.1 hectares of land, and is sold to every corner of Turkey.
Leaving city life behind and embracing nature, Filiz Ozcan quickly achieved remarkable success with her peony cultivation venture in the Susehri district of Sivas. In just one year, Ozcan transformed her hobby of flower cultivation into a lucrative business model, becoming a symbol of both production and female entrepreneurship.
42-year-old Filiz Ozcan left her crowded city life behind and embarked on a brand new life with her family in Susehri. Last year, she planted her first peony seedlings on a rented plot of land and began growing them with her husband and son. This venture quickly expanded to an area of 1.1 hectares
Filiz Ozcan stated that she and her family attended training about peony production and conducted research before starting production, saying, "We wanted to bring in a flower variety that wasn't available in our region. It's a flower with both high economic value and visual appeal. It's a production model that every woman can do." Ozcan emphasized the importance of female entrepreneurship, saying, "This business has not only given me income but also self-confidence."
Filiz Ozcan, aiming for a high yield in the first year of production, noted that they expect an average of 3-4 peonies from each stem. The entrepreneur pointed out that the field has 3,000 stems and aims to sell 10,000 to 15,000 flowers. Thanks to agreements with wholesalers in provinces such as Istanbul, Trabzon, Ordu, and Amasya, the products are being delivered to all 81 provinces of Turkey.
With her project, Filiz Ozcan is setting an example for rural development and the increased participation of women in economic life. The high market value of the products could also provide a new source of hope for regional farmers. Known as the "golden flower," the peony is highly sought after both as an ornamental plant and in the cut flower industry. The peonies Ozcan cultivates are harvested in the spring and are favored by florists and event companies.
