News » 06.06.2025 - NL: Course taking place on sea freights and long term storage for cut flower breeders

As global flower production and distribution evolve, sea freight is emerging as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to air freight. For breeders, this shift presents both challenges and opportunities. How can you prepare your breeding program for the demands of sea transport and long-term storage?

Join FlowerWatch for a half-day, hands-on training course designed specifically for breeders of cut flowers. Gain the knowledge, insights, and tools needed to ensure your varieties perform optimally in today's changing logistics landscape.

The course will be given in Dutch.

Through this course, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of current sea freight and long-term storage practices within the flower industry. They will acquire insight into the key characteristics of various flower varieties that impact their performance during sea transport, such as respiration rate, Botrytis sensitivity, dehydration, stem bending, and discoloration. The course will also provide an understanding of the effects of different post-harvest protocols, including the use of dipping with or without plant hormones and the importance of controlled versus regular atmosphere storage. Participants will gain clarity on how the performance of flowers is influenced by the growing location compared to variety genetics. Additionally, the course will equip individuals with skills to evaluate feedback from market trials and storage protocols, as well as provide tools to integrate these findings into breeding strategies and communication efforts.

The event will take place on June 19th, 2025, at Tech Campus De School, located at Schoolbaan 1, 2371 VJ Roelofarendsveen, The Netherlands. The program includes lunch at 12:30 PM followed by training from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM. The cost to attend is €350 per person, which includes lunch and training materials.
