News » 02.06.2025 - CNB Dutch Peony Days, June 4–6 in Bovenkarspel, NL: Eager to discover what’s blooming in the peony world?
From June 4 to 6, the CNB Dutch Peony Days will showcase the latest in peony cultivation in Bovenkarspel, the Netherlands. With 70 to 100 varieties on display and strong international interest, the event provides a timely overview of this season's trends, quality, and standout selections.
From cutting to bloom
An important part of the CNB Dutch Peony Days is showcasing the flowers that are grow from various tubers. "CNB acts as an intermediary in the trade of peony tubers, and during the Dutch Peony Days, we demonstrate the final product, the flower", says Gijs Laan, Peony and Perennial Representative at CNB.
Wide range of varieties
Between 70 and 100 peony varieties are expected to be on display, provided by several Dutch growers. The flowers will be exhibited at peak bloom, offering a cross-section of what is currently available on the market. The selection includes both widely grown and more exclusive varieties, providing a broad view of the current state of peony cultivation.
Growing conditions and quality
According to Laan, this year's peony crop shows strong quality, an encouraging contrast to last season. "Despite dry conditions in the spring, sufficient irrigation has supported healthy plant development, and many growers report positive results. In comparison, last year's excessive rainfall posed significant cultivation challenges and was one of the reasons the event was cancelled."
Pricing trends
Peony prices currently vary depending on the variety. Exclusive types are in strong demand, while standard varieties—such as Sarah Bernhardt—are selling for between €0.35 and €1.00 per stem. Quality is cited as the main factor influencing pricing.
Location and international participation
Originally held in Lisse, the event has been hosted in Bovenkarspel (Veilingweg 1) since 2021. The current facility offers more space and is located closer to major peony-growing areas. The event continues to attract international interest, with visitors expected from countries including Germany, Eastern Europe, and China. Its timing coincides with the Dutch Lily Days, encouraging additional participation from international guests.
CNB Dutch Peony Award
As in previous years, the CNB Dutch Peony Award will be presented during the event. A panel of four industry professionals will evaluate the submissions. Growers may still enter varieties they believe deserve recognition or are of special interest.
Awards will be given in the following categories: Best Lactiflora, Best Hybrid, Best ITOH, and Best Newcomer. A separate award will be presented to the overall best vase display, which will be named the CNB Dutch Peony Award 2025 winner.
