News » 28.05.2025 - A look at the current state of the Chinese flower market

China is one of the world's top flower producers, exporting millions of flowers each year. The country's production of potted plants keeps rising, making up 7.65% of total flower production and 30.08% of total sales.

In terms of flower types, Phalaenopsis orchids have grown significantly, with a 20% increase from last year. Meanwhile, the prices of traditional flowers like bromeliads and anthuriums have dropped because of slow sales and low demand. Bulb flowers such as lilies, amaryllis, and tulips are gaining popularity online, leading to higher production. Succulents, however, are becoming less popular, causing a steep decline in production. The market for Rhododendron is steadily growing. Ilex verticillata, sold as both potted plants and cut flowers, sees stable demand in the cut-flower market but rising demand for potted versions. Production of potted Ilex verticillata has increased from 1 million to over 3 million pots, especially in the main growing regions of Shandong and Yunnan. Maranta arundinacea faces strong competition due to many similar varieties, with around 7 million pots produced.

Tropical plants are gaining a larger market share, with online platforms playing a major role in their promotion and sale. Online prices are much lower than in physical stores, making shoppers more sensitive to prices.

The export of potted plants has increased by 39.4% compared to the previous year, reaching $260 million and making up 53% of all flower exports. In 2024, imports of potted plants rose by 2.1%, totaling $23.78 million.

Looking ahead, smaller potted plants are becoming more popular because they are easy to ship, budget-friendly for online buyers, and perfect for home gardening on desks or balconies.
