News » 20.05.2025 - 20% increase in attendance and many new growers expected at IFTEX 2025
The world's floral spotlight will shine on Nairobi this June as Kenya hosts the 12th edition of the International Floriculture Trade Expo (IFTEX) from June 3rd to 5th, 2025, at the Visa Oshwal Centre, Parklands. Organized by HPP Exhibitions, this event brings together over 200 exhibitors and thousands of international flower buyers, breeders, growers, and industry stakeholders.
Speaking during a press briefing held on Wednesday, May 13, in Nairobi, flower industry leaders emphasized the growing interest in Kenyan flowers and the unique role the country plays in the global flower supply chain.
IFTEX founder and HPP Exhibitions President Dick van Raamsdonk said, "IFTEX has come a long way over the past 12 years—and it just keeps getting bigger and better. This year, we expect a 20% increase in attendance, with many new growers joining the show, signaling the vibrancy and continued expansion of Kenya's flower sector."
An industry anchored in innovation
Kenya's floriculture industry—already ranked among the top five global exporters of fresh cut flowers—continues to blossom. With 88% of its exports destined for the European Union and 47% heading to the Netherlands, Kenya has carved out a formidable space in international markets.
Christine Chesaro, Director of the Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD), highlighted that in 2024, horticulture earned Kenya Ksh 136 billion, with flowers contributing 53% of that total, affirming the sector's critical role in the national economy.
"Despite challenges such as climate change, pests, and freight constraints, the industry has remained resilient," she noted. "This year's IFTEX is a timely platform to showcase new investments, innovations, and strategic partnerships."
Nairobi: Where the world's floral fraternity will meet
For three days, Nairobi will be the meeting point for the global flower fraternity. With Plant Breeders Rights (PBR) under KEPHIS ensuring compliance and intellectual property protection, Kenya now hosts nearly all major international breeders, who will be showcasing their latest and most exciting flower varieties at IFTEX 2025.
Dr. Isaac Macharia, General Manager of Phytosanitary Services at KEPHIS, underscored the country's commitment to quality assurance, including the rollout of e-Phyto certification, online inspection systems, and stringent export checks to meet international standards.
"Our phytosanitary systems guarantee buyers the highest quality and traceability. Kenya is ready to deliver world-class flowers—digitally certified, pest-free, and grown under strict compliance," said Dr. Macharia.
Sustainability at the forefront
As the floriculture world grapples with climate change and market demands for ethical sourcing, sustainability will take center stage at IFTEX 2025. According to Catherine Mukoko, COO of the Kenya Flower Council (KFC), the industry is upholding international certifications such as GlobalG.A.P., KS1758, and KFC's Flowers and Ornamentals Sustainability Standard (FOSS).
"Sustainability is our passport to global markets," said Mukoko. "We're showcasing not just blooms, but a resilient, responsible industry that's investing in digital transformation, climate-smart farming, and traceability powered by blockchain."
"IFTEX has become synonymous with vibrant displays of floral artistry, cutting-edge breeding technology, and trade opportunities. With new farms joining the sector, existing ones expanding, and greater adoption of digital tools, the 2025 edition promises a dazzling spectacle of innovation, sustainability, and market access."
