News » 09.05.2025 - India: Using modern flower farming techniques to make a livelihood

At a time when many young people are pursuing white-collar jobs, Bhag Singh from Charkha village in the Gohar subdivision has crafted a different kind of success story—one deeply connected to the land. Opting for farming over a career in the IT sector, Bhag Singh has turned to floriculture and now earns Rs 10 to 12 lakh annually from just 1,700 square meters of land.

With a degree in Information Technology, Bhag Singh initially worked in the IT sector. However, his passion for agriculture remained strong. Motivated by his deep interest, he made a bold decision to leave the corporate world and focus on cultivating his ancestral land.

In the beginning, Bhag Singh practiced traditional farming, growing crops like wheat, peas, barley, and maize. However, the unpredictability of nature—such as untimely rains and hailstorms—often affected his yields. Rather than giving up, he chose to adapt. He reached out to the Horticulture Department, which recommended he switch to flower farming using polyhouse technology. With guidance from the Agriculture University in Palampur, he received formal training.

In 2020, Bhag Singh ventured into floriculture by setting up three polyhouses under the Integrated Horticulture Development Mission and Himachal Pushpa Kranti Yojana. Encouraged by favorable market prices and healthy crops, he expanded his cultivation in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Today, he grows carnations, spray carnations, stoma, and gypso flowers, which he supplies to markets in Delhi.
