News » 18.10.2024 - Hungary makes geothermal priority EU

Hungary, as president of the European Council, is committed to accelerating the rollout of geothermal energy in the EU, as pointed out by Glastuinbouw Nederland.

In the margin of the board meeting of COPA-COGECA, president Adri Bom-Lemstra spoke to the Hungarian presidency. She welcomed the focus on geothermal heat and shared practical experiences of the greenhouse horticulture sector with this technology.

As president of the European Council of Ministers, Hungary hopes to come up with a plan to promote geothermal energy in Europe by the end of 2024. In particular, it wants to reduce the financial risks associated with this green energy. To this end, countries should better share experiences with each other, streamline licensing across the EU and between different layers of government, and recognize the importance of this energy source. To support this, the presidency wants to establish a European geothermal alliance, as exists for other types of renewable energy.

In practice, Glastuinbouw Nederland sees the need for a good guarantee scheme, appropriate financing, and acceleration of licensing to further scale up in the built environment. The business association is therefore pleased with Hungary's commitment to this issue and sees opportunities to further develop geothermal energy in Dutch greenhouse horticulture.
