News » 08.07.2024 - Turkey: 1.7 million flowers are grown in Samsun municipality greenhouse heated with energy from waste

Flowers produced in Turkey's first flower greenhouse, which is heated with waste heat, are admired by the residents of the city of Samsun. In 2004, 1.7 million flowers were grown in the greenhouse established by Samsun Municipality. The flowers grown in the greenhouses are used to decorate parks and the green areas in the city, and will add color to the landscape of Samsun.

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, which produces electricity from garbage in the Solid Waste Storage Zone, also uses the waste heat generated during electricity production in the greenhouse it has established. Colorful flowers are produced with 46 million kilowatts of energy produced annually, and the flowers produced are used in various neighborhoods of the city.

The greenhouse, which was built as a part of the 'Our Waste Turns into Flowers' project in 2022, expands its production range every year and sells flowers to surrounding provinces outside Samsun. The annual production rose from 1.3 million in 2023 to 1.7 million in 2024.

Stating that they attach importance to every environmentally friendly project, Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Halit Dogan said: "Our waste turns into flowers and is also used in the landscaping of our city. We are aware of the value of energy."
