News » 05.09.2025 - Ontario invests $41 million to expand irrigation pipelines
The Town of Lincoln is celebrating a major investment in Niagara's agricultural future, as the Ontario government announced $41 million in funding for irrigation pipelines to deliver reliable water to hundreds of farms and agricultural businesses.
This funding, part of the province's $135 million commitment to water and irrigation infrastructure in Niagara and Leamington, will ensure Lincoln's farms, greenhouses, wineries, and tender fruit producers have the water resources they need to grow, compete, and thrive — even in the face of drought, climate change, and global economic uncertainty.
The new irrigation pipelines will expand access to a consistent water supply, boosting crop yields and quality for high-value fruit and vegetable crops like peaches, grapes, and cherries, supporting greenhouse operations, and promoting long-term farm sustainability through efficient water management and conservation practices.
The Town of Lincoln worked closely with the Niagara Region, the provincial government, and agricultural stakeholders to help secure this investment, which will benefit Lincoln farmers for generations to come.
"This is a game-changer for Lincoln's agricultural community," said Mayor Sandra Easton, Town of Lincoln. "Water is life for our farms and greenhouses. With this historic investment, our growers will have the stability they need to keep producing world-class vegetables, flowers, fruit, wine, and greenhouse crops, even in challenging seasons. It's a win for our economy, a win for our farmers, and a win for food security across Ontario. I want to thank Premier Ford, Minister Surma, and our local MPP Sam Oosterhoff for recognizing the value of Niagara's agricultural sector and delivering the infrastructure we need to succeed."
This funding is the result of years of advocacy by Mayor Easton, and collaboration, bringing all levels of government together with the shared goal of securing Lincoln's agricultural future.
"This investment represents the culmination of strong collaboration between our municipal team, regional partners, and the provincial government," said Michael Kirkopoulos, Chief Administrative Officer, Town of Lincoln. "Reliable irrigation infrastructure is critical to our local economy and the livelihoods of our farmers and greenhouse operators. This funding will not only strengthen the resilience of our agricultural sector, but also support economic growth, innovation, and sustainability for decades to come."
"Our farmers and greenhouse operators are at the heart of Lincoln's identity and economy", Ward 3 Councillor and Chair of the Community Services and Infrastructure Committee, Mike Mikolic emphasized."This investment ensures they'll have the tools they need to thrive today and for generations to come. It's about protecting livelihoods, preserving our rural heritage, and keeping Lincoln a leader in agricultural excellence"
The Town of Lincoln thanks the Province of Ontario, Niagara Region, and its municipal partners for their leadership and commitment to advancing infrastructure projects that address both housing needs and the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
