News » 04.07.2025 - Ornamental plant greenhouse destroyed by fire in Italy
Late in the evening of Wednesday, 28 May 2025, a devastating fire broke out at an ornamental plant nursery in the province of Mantua, Italy. The cause of the fire is still unknown. Despite a swift response from the owner and immediate action by the fire brigade, the blaze destroyed nearly the entire facility.
The nursery, which specialized in ornamental plants, suffered a total loss—not only of its crops, but also of all essential systems. This includes the heating and cooling installations, irrigation setup, water tanks, and more.
Gartenbau-Versicherung's Risk Manager, responsible for this region, was quickly on-site to assess the damage and support the grower. According to initial estimates, the total damage amounts to approximately €350,000.
Despite the initial shock and devastation, the grower is determined to begin clearing the site and rebuilding the greenhouse as soon as possible. Fortunately, having the right insurance coverage has brought a small ray of hope in an otherwise dark moment.
To help the business get back on its feet, Gartenbau-Versicherung has already issued an advance payment of €50,000.
"In the aftermath of a fire of this scale, your first thought is that everything's gone," said Roberto De Vivo, Risk Manager at Gartenbau-Versicherung. "That's why it's vital to show up immediately and provide our insured grower with as much support as possible, right from the start."
